📺 Works for every app on the TV 🏠 Decides on the TV, not on a server 🙈 No query history, no analytics ✅ Per-app and per-domain exceptions
Features

Simple to switch on. Easy to fine-tune.

⏻

One switch

Turn on filtering and accept Android’s VPN request once. It keeps working while you watch, outside the app.

📱

Per-app bypass

Set any TV app to Filtered or Bypassed. Applying a change reconnects the local tunnel without asking again.

✓

Allowlist

Allow a domain and all its subdomains. Your exceptions always win over the blocklist.

📋

Rules included

Maintained HaGeZi Light rules ship with the app, so nothing needs downloading first. Updates are manual, over HTTPS, validated and atomic.

🔢

Real counts

The Overview shows how many requests were blocked and allowed in this session. Counters live in memory only.

🔐

Private by design

No DNS query history, sign-in, advertising ID or analytics. Only your exceptions and the rule file are kept on the TV.

How it works

Only DNS goes through it.

Android only lets apps filter traffic through a VPN, so Hoides Filter creates a local one that carries nothing but DNS lookups. Video, HTTPS and your home network never pass through it, and nothing is sent to a remote VPN server.

  • Only the address 10.111.0.2 is routed into the local tunnel
  • Allowed lookups go to your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network’s own DNS servers
  • IPv4 and IPv6 lookups are filtered the same way
  • Turning it off restores the normal network path at once

Android’s warning, explained

When you turn filtering on, Android may say that this app can monitor network traffic. That message is generic to every VPN app. Hoides Filter only looks at DNS lookups to decide whether a domain is on the blocklist, and keeps no record of them.

Good to know

What it can’t do

  • It reduces ads served from their own domains. It does not promise ad-free YouTube, JioHotstar, Zee5 or other streaming apps: ads that share a domain or video stream with the show can’t be separated by DNS.
  • Apps using encrypted DNS, fixed IP addresses or cached answers can bypass it.
  • It doesn’t start by itself after the TV restarts; turn it on again in the app.
  • Android allows one VPN at a time, and a custom Private DNS setting must be set back to Automatic first.
Requirements

What you need

TV: Android TV or Google TV Android: 8.0 or newer Install: sideload the APK

Blocklist: HaGeZi Light, licensed GPL-3.0; the full licence is included in the app.

Hoides Filter is a separate app. It works with or without Hoides TV and Hoides Streamer.

A quieter TV, decided on the TV.

Install, switch it on, and add exceptions if an app needs them.
